Setting new milestones in Mekong-Japan cooperative mechanism

VGP – PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc is participating in the 10th Mekong-Japan Summit and visits Japan with a view to making positive contributions to the mechanism and elevating the bilateral ties to a new height.

The Mekong-Japan cooperation mechanism was set up ten years ago by Japan and five Mekong nations of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

Viet Nam has affirmed its increasingly important role in the cooperation mechanism by actively involving a line-up of activities like the Green Mekong Forum, and cooperative programs in environment, clean water, disaster prevention, among others.

The country is drawing up a plan for the cooperative activities in the 2019-2021 period.

Vietnamese ministries and sectors have involved in some 100 projects carried out in the framework of the mechanism. Among them, Lach Huyen deep-water port, Noi Bai International Airport’s terminal 2, O Mon thermal power plant, and Nghi Son 2 thermal power plant are important projects to Viet Nam’s infrastructure system.

Viet Nam has also put forth projects to connect the Sub-Mekong region and integrate the Mekong water resources management into the cooperation mechanism.

The 10th Mekong-Japan Summit Meeting marks ten years of the Mekong-Japan cooperation mechanism, and three years of carrying out the Tokyo Strategy 2015. Viet Nam’s attendance at the event aims to affirm the country’s commitment to this cooperation mechanism.

The meeting will also offer an opportunity for relevant sides to review experience in the past ten years, map out major orientations, and recommend measures to improve cooperation efficiency in the coming time.

On the occasion, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc will pay a visit to Japan.

The visit takes place at a special time when the two countries are marking the 45th anniversary of the diplomatic relations. It aims to tighten the Viet Nam-Japan extensive strategic partnership which is developing fruitfully across fields, contributing to enhancing mutual political trust between the two countries.

Japan has been the biggest ODA provider of Viet Nam and the country’s fourth largest trade partner. In 2017, Japan became the top foreign investor in Viet Nam with total investment of US$ 9.1 billion, four times higher than that in 2016.

Defense, security, culture, education-training and tourism collaboration and people-to-people exchange between the two countries have also been expanded.

Currently, more than 260,000 Vietnamese people are living, studying and working in Japan, becoming the fifth largest foreign community in Japan. As many as 37 pairs of localities of both sides have set up partnerships. Last year, Japan ranked third in the number of tourists to Viet Nam with 800,000, while 300,000 Vietnamese travelled Japan.

The two countries have also collaborated closely at international and regional forums such as the United Nations, ASEAN Plus, APEC, and ASEM. They coordinated in promoting negotiations for and signing of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and talks on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), while backing each other to run for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and collaborating in regional and international issues of shared concern, thus contributing to building an Asia-Pacific region of peace, stability, development in line with international law./.
