The dialogue was attended by Vice President of the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam (DAV) Nguyen Hung Son, Chancellor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) Kim Joon-hyung, and experts from leading foreign and security affairs think tanks of the ten ASEAN member countries.

In his opening remarks, DAV Vice President Nguyen Hung Son affirmed that intensifying cooperation between ASEAN and the RoK, including promoting dialogues on strategic issues, is of significance at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is making the world and regional situations become more uncertain and unpredictable, which is posing challenges to small and medium-sized countries such as ASEAN members and the RoK.

Meanwhile, KNDA Chancellor Kim Joon-hyung said that ASEAN has become a focus in his country’s foreign policy.

The experts made presentations and had discussions on assessments and prospects for regional and international landscape in the post-COVID-19 era and ways to increase cooperation between ASEAN and the Northeast Asian country.

They stated that the RoK’s New Southern Policy has actively manifested its commitments to the region, adding that closer cooperation between ASEAN and the RoK will help promote the central role of ASEAN and increase the status of both sides.

With the aim of promoting ASEAN-RoK cooperation during 2021-2025, delegates recommended ASEAN and the RoK continue the effective implementation of reached cooperative contents, particularly tackling the negative impacts of COVID-19 and promoting post-pandemic economic recovery.

Both sides should harmonize the bilateral relationship between the RoK and each ASEAN country and foster coordination in ASEAN-led mechanisms, focusing on potential and priority areas such as infrastructure, digital economy, water security in the Greater Mekong Sub-region and high-quality human resource development.

The 2nd ASEAN-ROK Think Tank Strategic Dialogue offered an opportunity to solidify the institutional foundation for increasing mutual understanding and trust even amid difficulty in holding a face-to-face meeting due to COVID-19.
