Road crashes claim nearly 40,000 lives in five years

VGP – A total of 39,900 people were killed and over 70,000 others injured in more than 94,000 traffic accidents nationwide over the last five years, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC).

These above figures were released at a video conference on Wednesday to review five-year implementation of the emulation movement to ensure traffic order and safety in 2016-2020 period and road safety year 2020.

The number of accidents, deaths, and injuries decreased by 70,000, 9,400, and 90,000, respectively, against the previous five-year period, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Speaking at the event, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh, who is the Chairman of the NTSC, highlighted that the adoption of the Law No. 44/2019/QH14 on Prevention and Control of Alcoholic Beverage Harms and Decree No. 100/2019/ND-CP on administrative sanctions for road traffic and rail transport violations have proved effective in improving traffic participants’ sense of compliance with traffic safety rules.

The dissemination of legal regulations has also been strengthened with engagement of ministries, agencies, localities, mass media and organizations, Binh said.

Deputy PM Binh, however, stressed that the number of deaths and injuries remains high while traffic congestions are complicated in municipalities, including Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City.

He urged subordinate levels to focus on revision of the Law on Road Traffic as part of the efforts to further improve legal regulations on traffic management, speed up construction of key transport projects like the North-South expressway, Trung Luong-My Thuan expressway, and improve effectiveness of inspection, control and handling of violations of traffic safety rules./.
