The northern coastal province of Quang Ninh is planned to become an economic locomotive of the north and the country by 2020

The target is set in a master plan on the province’s socio-economic development to 2020 with a vision to 2030, which has recently approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Economically, Quang Ninh province strives to reach an average growth rate of 12-13%/year for the 2011-2020 period while the gross domesitc product (GDP) per capita will be US$3,600-4,000, US$8,000-8,500 and US$20,000 by 2015, 2020 and 2030 respectively.

It will foster development of trade, services and especially tourism, turning itself into an economic locomotive pushing the northern and national development and a gateway for international economic cooperation, particularly that with China.

Tourism, which is expected to become one of major economic growth sources of the province by 2020 with around 10.5 million visitors, will be developed comprehensively with a focus on available assets of cultural and world natural wonder heritage whilst environmental protection is enhanced.

Industrially, Quang Ninh province plans to achieve a 14%/year growth rate in processing and manufacturing industry by 2020 while attracting foreign investment in assembly industry, electronic manufacturing services (EMS) and promoting food processing in large-scale factories and medium and small enterprises.

Sustainable coal extraction is also a priority accompanying targets of tourism development and living standard improvement. Coal industry is expected to grow by 3.5%/year in the 2011-2015 period and 3.1%/year in the 2015-2020 period.

The province will supply power sustainably and stably to all households by 2015, striving to reach 25.3%/year growth rate to 2015 and 22.1%/year in the 2015-2020 period.

In addition, Quang Ninh province will continue to maintain the development of non-metallic material extraction, construction materials, ceramics, handicrafts and engineering.

Ha Long city will be the center of the province’s development while western and eastern corridors will be established, together with two economic spearheads of Van Don and Mong Cai economic zones, in order to ensure a linkage among the province’s localites and to promote strengths of each locality, as well as to enhance the province’s position in the Red River Delta and the northern key economic region.

An urban network will be developed by upgrading numerous towns and regions to urban areas by 2015 and 2020.
