President hails stage artists’ role in culture
 
The Party and State always treasure the role of performing arts in the national culture and create favourable conditions for the arts to develop, President Truong Tan Sang said at the 8th congress of the
Viet Nam Association of Stage Artists in Ha Noi on December 17.
 
He commended the association on its efforts to encourage and help stage artists exploit to the most their talent and creativity as well as popularising the arts through organising field trips, training courses, exchanges and overseas study tours for association members.
 
Deputy PM Phuc affirms investment opportunities for foreign investors
 
Deputy PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc has affirmed that Viet Nam is strengthening the market economy, modernizing infrastructure, developing high quality human resources, boosting industrialization and modernization and proactively implementing international integration, which will surely open up numerous investment and business opportunities for foreign investors.
 
Deputy PM Phuc made the statement when attending and addressing the Viet Nam-the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Business Leaders’ Forum in Dubai on December 16, as part of his ongoing official visit to the UAE.
 
VN condemns terrorist act in any form
 
Viet Nam condemns terrorist acts in any form, Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Le Hai Binh has said in response to a school attack in the northern Pakistani city of Peshawar that left hundreds of people dead and injured on December 16.
 
The terrorist attack on civilians and children is barbarian and unacceptable, Binh said on December 17.
Viet Nam conveys deep condolences and sympathy to the government and people of Pakistan, the families of victims and believes that the instigators will be punished appropriately soon, he said.
 
VN submits BUR to UNFCCC Secretariat

Viet Nam has submitted its first Biennial Update Reports (BUR) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat at the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP 20) held recently in Lima, Peru.
 
As the second developing country in the world to do so, VietNam illustrated its strong commitment to join global climate change efforts.
 
The country contributed constructively to the building of a new global pact on climate change adaptation to be reached in 2015 and other contents of the COP 20.
 
Population exceeds 90 million
 
The General Statistics Office has announced that Viet Nam’s population reached 90,493,352, ranking 13th in the world and third in Southeast Asia.
 
After five years, the population rose by 4,646,355, an annual average increase of 929,271.
 
The average population growth was 1.06% per year in the 2009-2014 period over 1.2% per year of the 1999-2009 period.
 
The total fertility rate was 2.09 births per woman. This is the lowest population growth period over the past 35 years.
 
Ministers arrive at scene to direct rescue efforts for trapped workers
 
Two ministers arrived at the scene of the hydropower plant accident in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on December 17 to supervise efforts to rescue 12 workers trapped inside the collapsed tunnel at the construction site of Da Dang – Da Chomo hydropower plant.
 
Minister of Construction Trinh Dinh Dung and Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang emphasised that the foremost priority should be given to rescuing the workers.
 
Festival to honour cultural essence of VN‘s Thai ethnic group
 
The first-ever cultural festival of Viet Nam’s Thai ethnic group will be held in Lai Chau province on December 27-29.
 
The three-day event will draw the participation of eight provinces, including Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An.
 
Typical cultural features of Thai people will be introduced to visitors during the event, including a show of their traditional costumes; performances of traditional festivals, rituals and cultural practices; displays of cultural and tourist products; and folk dances.
 
Vietnamese goods dominate Christmas market in HN
 
The Xmas market has been bustling in every corner of the capital Ha Noi, seeing a flood of made-in-Viet Nam goods.
 
Up to 80% of eye-catching decorations such as pine trees, bells, wreath garlands, ball and star ornaments, reindeer figures, and Santa Claus costumes sold in Hang Ma, Hang Ngang and Luong Van Can streets are produced locally.
 
Vietjet Air receives second aircraft from Airbus
 
Low cost carrier Vietjet Air received the second aircraft from its order of 100 jets from Airbus on December 17.
 
The brand new Airbus A320, departing from Hamburg, Germany, landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City at 7:50am.
 
It was purchased through a financing agreement signed between Vietjet Air and US-based GE Capital and Viet Nam’s TP Bank./.
