According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy PM Pham Binh Minh held talks with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and met with U.S. National Security Adviser Herbert Raymond McMaster and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin during his official visit on April 20-21 to the US.

Earlier on December 14, 2016, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc held phone talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.

President Trump spoke highly of the achievements Viet Nam gained over the past time as well as the positive developments in the bilateral ties.

He also asserted he wishes to cooperate with Viet Nam to accelerate the relationship between the two countries.

The two took the occasion to discuss on orientations and measures to strengthen economic, trade and investment ties in the time to come.

Viet Nam and the U.S. established comprehensive partnership in July 2013 to provide an overarching framework for advancing the relationship.

The new comprehensive partnership creates mechanisms for cooperation in areas including political and diplomatic relations, trade and economic ties, science and technology, education and training, environment and health, war legacy issues, defense and security, protection and promotion of human rights, and culture, sports, and tourism.
