Party chief welcomes Russian top legislators

VGP – Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on November 24 (local time) in Moscow separately met with Chairwoman of Russia's Federation Council (Upper House) Valentina Matvienko and Acting Chairman of the Russian State Duma (Lower House) Ivan Ivanovich Melnikov during his ongoing official visit to Russia.

During the meetings, General Secretary Trong and the two Russian legislators agreed to early concretize cooperative agreements; pass operation plans of parliamentary friendshipgroups and speed up supervision of the implementation of agreements inked between the two Governments.

The two Russian top legislators held that the visit of Mr. Trong was an important landmark for the bilateral relations and would cement and deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between Viet Nam and Russia.

Party General Secretary Trong and the two Russian leaders agreed that Viet Nam-Russia relations in general and the relations between the two national assemblies in particular had developed through high-ranking visits of leaders from both sides.

Earlier, the Vietnamese National Assembly signed cooperation agreements with the Russian Federation Council and the Russian State Duma to create an important legal foundation for the enhancement of bilateral co-operation and exchange of law-making experience, supervision, documents and information.

The Russian hosts stressed that though there were different political parties in the two houses, all parties in Russia supported friendly and comprehensive cooperation with Viet Nam.

The Russian legislators shared the Vietnamese leader's opinion on the East Sea issue, saying that all Asia-Pacific disputes needed to be solved by peaceful measures, based on international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

They also agreed to support each other in creating favourable conditions for Vietnamese in Russia and Russian in Viet Nam and work closely together at the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF).

Mr. Trong also sent invitations from Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung to Russian Parliamentary leaders to pay an official visit to Viet Nam in December 2014 and attend the 132nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union scheduled in early 2015 in Viet Nam./.
