The Party chief was sworn in as the new State President of Viet Nam at the National Assembly Headquarters the same day.

Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, Mr. Trong said that the new position is both a great honor and a heavy responsibility, and pledged to work hard to fulfill the promises he had made.

He expressed his hope for broad support from leaders and former leaders of the Party, the State, the Viet Nam Fatherland Front, legislators, voters and people, as well as coordination from the Legislature, the Government and the Viet Nam Fatherland Front agencies, socio-political organisations, judicial bodies, and localities.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is the only candidate for the position following the death of former State President Tran Dai Quang.

Earlier this month, the Party Central Committee recommended Party chief Trong to be the next State President at its 8th Plenum.

Mr. Trong, born on April 14, 1944, has been member of the CPVCC in the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th tenures and member of the Politburo of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th tenures.

He has served as Chairman of the National Assembly from 2006-2011 and Party General Secretary since 2011./.
