Party chief & top legislator meet with Canadian PM

VGP – Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan separately hosted receptions on November 8 in Ha Noi for Canadian PM Justin Trudeau who was in Viet Nam for an official visit and APEC Summit Week.

The Party chief welcomed and praised the official visit of PM Justin Trudeau, regarding this as an important milestone in the bilateral ties. 

Mr. Trong briefed his guest about Viet Nam’s reform, development and foreign policies, underlining that Viet Nam always treasures the traditional friendship with Canada.

The host leader hailed the outcomes of the talks between Vietnamese PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau, suggesting the two sides implement the reached agreements well and continue enhancing bilateral ties in the interests of the two peoples and for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

In return, PM Justin Trudeau expressed his deep impression of Viet Nam’s economic development achievements, mainly in improving people’s living standards. The guest leader also spoke highly of the country’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, and multilateralisation and diversification of foreign relations. 

He pledged to strongly support the bilateral cooperation in economics, science-technology, education, and promotion of multilateralism on the basis of respecting law in a globalised world.  

The PM also applauded Viet Nam’s preparations for and important contributions to the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which is going to take place in Da Nang city in the next few days

The same day, NA Chairwoman Ngan said that the issuance of a joint statement on the comprehensive partnership is an important step and a necessary basis to promote bilateral relations in a substantive, stable and long-term manner and in the interest of respective country while receiving the Canadian PM. 

The top legislator thanked the Canadian Government for its new projects worth over US$ 43 million to support the Southeast Asian nation to deal with climate change, ensure food safety and increase cooperatives’ capacity. 

She also voiced her support for Canada’s foreign policy of enhancing connectivity with the world and the Asian-Pacific region and strengthening relations with Viet Nam and ASEAN. 

For his part, PM Justin Trudeau revealed that  Canada respects the relations with Viet Nam in its overall foreign diplomatic policy. 

On this occasion, the two leaders exchanged views on such issues as gender equality, women empowerment and children protection, adding that these fields should become their countries’ policy priorities.

They also expressed their support for the maintenance of order on the basis of international law, peaceful settlement of East Sea disputes, and full respect for diplomatic and legal processes and international law./.
