The Vietnamese Government chief, who is in Laos to attend the 40th meeting of the Viet Nam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee, highly valued the efforts of the Unitel, a trademark of the Star Telecom and a joint venture between Viet Nam’s Viettel Group and Laos’ Asia Telecom, to provide services covering up to 95% of Laos’ territory.

PM Phuc suggested the Star Telecom continue coordinating with Lao authorities in e-Government and scientific and technological development, thus contributing to socio-economic progress in the neighboring country.

He also expressed thanks to Laos for its support and assistance to the Star Telecom to become a typical example of economic cooperation between the two countries.

Unitel Director General Cao Anh Son said Unitel has been the largest telecom operator in Laos during the past seven consecutive years with 2.8 million customers, accounting for 52% of the market share in Laos.

The Unitel has also helped create positive changes in Laos’ telecom sector as the number of Laotians accessing to mobile phones has risen significantly.

After nine years of operation, Unitel has earned accumulated revenues of US$1.22 billion./.
