The visit is made at the invitation of Lao PM Thongloun Sisoulith.

The 39th meeting of the Viet Nam-Laos Intergovernmental Committee was organized in Ha Noi on February 8, 2017.

After the meeting, the two sides inked four documents including an agreement on cooperation plan between the two Governments in 2017; the minute of the 39th meeting of the Viet Nam-Laos Intergovernmental Committee; a cooperative plan between the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training and the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports; and the minute on the establishment of a joint venture on the Lao-Viet Nam 500 kV electricity transmission line construction project.

In 2017, the two countries celebrated the Viet Nam-Laos Friendship and Solidarity Year, the 55th founding anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the bilateral Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.
