DPM Minh holds talks with US Secretary of State

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc made that statement at his reception for U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on July 9 on the occasion of the latter's official visit to Viet Nam.

Mr. Michael Pompeo said he was delighted to make his first official visit to Viet Nam and conveyed President Donald Trump’s regards to PM Phuc.

The U.S. attaches importance to the comprehensive partnership with Viet Nam and commits to enhancing the relationship in the upcoming time, he asserted.

The two sides spoke highly of the practical achievements in the two countries’ relations in fields of politics-diplomacy, economy-trade, security-defense and settlement of post-war consequences.

The Vietnamese leader confirmed that economic-trade linkages still remain the driving force in the bilateral relationship, noting with pleasure that progress in this domain has met aspirations of the two people.

The host and the guest were pleased with the success of the dioxin decontamination project at Da Nang Airport.

Mr. Michael Pompeo reaffirmed the U.S.’s commitment to implementing a similar project at the Bien Hoa Airport.

They also discussed regional and international issues of common concerns, including the East Sea situation.

The U.S. diplomat asserted the U.S. standpoint of advocating the settlement of disputes based on international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and early conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) that is effective and legally-binding.

Mr. Pompeo backs the central role of ASEAN in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Vietnamese PM welcomed recent efforts of related sides in accelerating the  peace and denuclearization process in the Korean Peninsula, affirming that Viet Nam will continue to be an active and responsible member of the international community in this process.
