VNGOVNet – The PM has just approved the Project "Transport infrastructure development for Mekong Delta" with loans funded by World Bank and non-refundable aids from the Australian Government through AusAID (Project WB5). The US$ 312.02-million-worth project consists of four components carried out in 13 centrally-administered cities and provinces: Bến Tre, Sóc Trăng, Cà Mau, Vĩnh Long, An Giang, Long An, Tiền Giang, Đồng Tháp, Hậu Giang, Kiên Giang, Bạc Liêu, Trà Vinh and Cần Thơ city.

February 21, 2007 9:16 AM GMT+7

With the duration from 2007-2013, the project's goals are to improve the transport system, minimize traffic jams in key roads and waterways; reduce costs for transportation from producers to markets, exporters, and agencies to support socio-economic development and poverty alleviation in the Mekong Delta.

The Ministry of Transport is the governing body for Component A (National Highways 53, 54 and 91); Component B (national waterway corridors); and Component D (institutional support for the Ministry of Transport and provinces).

For Component C (provincial roads and local waterways), the governing bodies are the People's Committees of the concerned provinces.

The PM assigned the Ministry of Transport to collect opinions from the related ministries, sectors, and local authorities to complete the project, make investment decision, function as the main coordinator and manage the project in accordance with current regulations and agreements with the donors; act as the main implementer in collaboration with the related ministries, sectors and local authorities in ratifying the project's documents which will be used for negotiations with the donors about loans and non-refundable grants; and receive non-refundable aids from the Australian Government.
