PM meets world leaders on G20 Summit sidelines

VGP – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump, Chilean President Sebastian Piñera, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan on Friday.

At the meetings, the foreign leaders expressed wish to step up ties with Viet Nam and congratulated the Southeast Asian country on winning a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2020-2021 tenure.

They also expressed support for Viet Nam as the ASEAN Chair in 2020 as well as their willing to to beef up cooperation with ASEAN member States to contribute to peace, stability, cooperation, development, security and safety of aviation and navigation in the region.

President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker applauded the signing of trade and investment agreements between Viet Nam and the European Union on Sunday June 30, which will create a strong impetus for advancing the bilateral ties to new height.

The EC President spoke highly of Viet Nam’s efforts in international integration and fruitful cooperation with the EU, urging the two sides to ratify the trade and investment deals right in 2019.

Chinese President Xi said this is the 3rd meeting with Vietnamese PM Phuc over the past seven months and the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating the realization of high-level agreements reached in the previous meetings and agreed to foster high-level visits to deepen the bilateral cooperation.

US President Trump welcomed and voiced support for strategic energy cooperation with Viet Nam and hailed the Vietnamese Government’s efforts to crack down on violations of trade fraud and product origin rules.

Both countries will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on long-term energy cooperation.

President Trump also voiced support for strong cooperation between Viet Nam and the US.

Canadian PM Trudeau agreed with PM Phuc’s proposal to expand cooperation across fields, especially in effective implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Both sides also agreed to broaden cooperation to new areas like finance, high-tech, agriculture, and renewable energy.

Trudeau pledged to take more measures to strengthen education cooperation with Viet Nam to increase presence of Vietnamese students in his country.

PM Phuc and Indian President Modi unanimously agreed to beef up cooperation in various fields like trade, energy, defense, education, cultural exchanges, tourism, and aviation connectivity between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Chilean President said his country expects stronger cooperation with Viet Nam in both bilateral and multilateral aspects, including cooperation between Viet Nam and the Pacific Alliance (PA)./.
