PM hosts receptions for ASEAN Secretary General, Myanmar Vice President

VGP - PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc on March 31 hosted receptions for Secretary General of the ASEAN Lim Jock Hoi and Vice President of Myanmar U Henry Van Thio on the sidelines of the sixth Greater Mekong Subregion Summit (GMS-6).

At the meeting with the ASEAN Secretary General, the PM stressed the increasing role of the ASEAN chief and ASEAN Secretariat in enhancing regional connectivity and ensuring harmony among nations. 

The Vietnamese leader expressed his hopes in the coming time,the ASEAN Secretariat will further promote its function of researching and proposing policies as well as strengthen supervision and coordination of the implementation of the cooperative agreements within ASEAN.

The PM highlighted the ASEAN Secretariat’s tasks of strengthening solidarity among member countries and its role in maintaining a peaceful and sustainable environment and creating favorable conditions for people and businesses. 

Viet Nam is willing to do its utmost to contribute to the bloc’s development, he affirmed, suggesting the ASEAN Secretary General coordinate and create conditions for Viet Nam to fulfill the role of ASEAN Chair by 2020.

The ASEAN chief expected that Viet Nam will fulfill its role as ASEAN Chair by 2020, expressing his wish that PM Phuc will consider financial support to make contribution to improving the effectiveness of the ASEAN Secretariat’s activities in the upcoming time.

At the reception for Myanmar’s Vice President Henry Van Thio on the same day, PM Phuc congratulated  Myanmar on its newly-elected President. 

Mr.  Henry Van Thio expressed thanks for Viet Nam’s assistance for Myanmar over the recent years, expecting to learn from the country's experience in the national development and international integration from Viet Nam. 

The two sides hailed the developments of their relationship, especially after upgrading it into the Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership in August 2017, including the two-way trade value in 2017 reaching US$828.3 million, up 51% against the previous year. 

Viet Nam has become the ninth largest trade partner and ranked seventh among investors in Myanmar. 

The two sides consented to raise the two-way trade value to US$1 billion in the near future. 

The leaders committed to maintaining delegation exchanges at all levels and soon establishing new cooperative mechanisms as well as boosting negotiations and enhancing the signing of cooperative agreements in agriculture-aquatic-forestry, transport and justice.  

Mr. Henry Van Thio asserted that Myanmar continues facilitating the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Viet Nam and Viettel Group to launch operation in the nation.
