PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc made the above statement at the Legislature’s Q&A session on November 18.

He said Viet Nam has deployed diplomatic activities and joined multilateral cooperation frameworks in a proactive and active approach.

Especially, Viet Nam successfully hosted the APEC Year 2017 and welcomed a number of State visits by foreign leaders with important strategic outcomes reaped.

During the 31st ASEAN Summit and related Summits in the Philippines, Viet Nam made proactive and active contributions to the joint documents.

The proactive and active approach has helped enhance political trust, promote the image and hospitality as well as prestige and position of Viet Nam on the international stage, PM Phuc stressed.

Viet Nam has signed or implemented 10 free trade agreements (FTAs) and is engaging in talks on four others, becoming an increasingly important stakeholder of the regional and global economic network.

The country has also established trade ties with 230 countries and territories across the world, seriously and fully implemented its World Trade Organization commitments, and effectively used dispute settlement mechanisms to protect its legitimate interests.

At the same time, impetuses have been created to accelerate reform and improvement of the socialist-oriented market economy institutions. The legal system has been improved in line with the international standards, the Government chief said.

PM Phuc, however, pointed that challenges still remain vast due to complicated developments in the world, the region and the East Sea.

The FTAs have not been effectively exploited while competitiveness is still limited, PM Phuc said.

The Government will continue beefing up international integration process as enshrined in the resolutions approved by the Politburo and the Legislature, resolutely and consistently protect maritime sovereignty and national interests.

The Government will also actively work with relevant partners to soon conclude talks on the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (the new version of the Trans-Pacific Partnership) and speed up the signing and ratification of the trade deal with the European Union./.
