PM greets international guests on GEF 6 sidelines

VGP – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc hosted separate meetings for Achim Steiner, Director General of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP); Li Yong, Director General of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO); and Takehiko Nakao, President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), on the sidelines of the 6th Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF 6) in Da Nang city on June 27.

During their meeting, PM Phuc and the UNDP chief, Achim Steiner, discussed the UN’s efforts to renovate the UN development system in orientation towards enhancing transparency, representativeness, and democracy of the UN’s organizations, aiming to provide better support for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. 

The two sides agreed to accelerate the Viet Nam-UN relations as a whole and the Viet Nam-UNDP ties in particular. PM Phuc spoke highly of the 40-year relationship between Viet Nam and the UN, stressing that Viet Nam always values the UN’s central role and will continue to contribute actively to the UN’s three major pillars, namely peace, development and promotion of human rights.

Achim Steiner said he was impressed by the achievements that Viet Nam has attained after 30 years of Doi Moi (Renewal), especially the country’s success in socio-economic development and its prompt realization of many millennium development goals (MDGs).

Receiving UNIDO Director General Li Yong, PM Phuc highly appreciated the UNIDO’s support for Viet Nam concerning the body’s policy advice, especially a project to support the construction of industrial zones in five big cities, and advice on energy efficiency and waste treatment.

Viet Nam is willing to cooperate with the UNIDO in implementing the green energy strategy, the government leader said, calling for the UN organization’s support of the infrastructure construction projects connecting China with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a whole, and with Viet Nam in particular. 

Applauding the cooperation proposals made by the Vietnamese PM, Li Yong highlighted Viet Nam’s significant contributions to the UNIDO, voicing his hopes that the two sides would continue to work closely together in the time ahead.

Meeting with ADB President Takehiko Nakao, PM Phuc hailed the bank as an important partner of Viet Nam, and one of the leading sponsors in providing capital and technical assistance for the country, thus contributing to promoting Viet Nam’s socio-economic development.

Nakao spoke highly of the significant socio-economic achievements Viet Nam has obtained over the past few years, while welcoming the Vietnamese government’s approval of the five projects and programs on the 2018 list. The ADB wishes to collaborate with Viet Nam in order to facilitate the progress of these projects, he said.

At a reception for Paul Polman, the CEO of Unilever, on June 27, PM Phuc welcomed Unilever’s appearance in Viet Nam since 1995, hailing this as a typical example of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Viet Nam. He called on Unilever to continue developing and paying attention to environmental protection during the production process.

Expressing his pride in Unilever’s presence in Viet Nam over the past 24 years, Paul Polman pledged sustainable development and increased exports from Viet Nam, in addition to developing other supporting industries. He also said that he would work actively to facilitate European firms’ investment in Viet Nam.
