Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 15th ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting (ATM) in Hà Nội on Thursday morning, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng highlighted the important role of transport in socio-economic development in each country as well as for prosperity of ASEAN. Transport connectivity is an indispensable factor in the realization of the ASEAN Community by 2015, stressed the Vietnamese Government chief, urging ASEAN member states to cement cooperation in this field.

Sites of traffic jams, bottle-necks and administrative troubles should be quickly cleared, suggested PM Dũng.

The host leader said that Việt Nam considers infrastructure one of very essential foundations for socio-economic development, industrialization and modernization. While combating negative impacts of the global economic recession, the Government of Việt Nam still gave priorities to transport infrastructure development, PM Dũng stated.

In its transport development plan to 2020 and with visions to 2030, Việt Nam will further invest in transport, focusing on deep-water ports, airports, urban transport networks and expressways connecting to ASEAN and partner countries.

PM Dũng asked ASEAN Ministers to discuss and propose ideas for the transport development strategy in ASEAN as well as specific measures to realize them.

The 15th ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting will last for two days on December 10-11, focusing its discussions on cooperation programs and plans on aviation, maritime and land transport in order to liberate and open markets as well as facilitate cross-border and transit transport among ASEAN countries and with partners.

There will be ministerial meetings between ASEAN and China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. Some documents will be signed, including the Multilateral Agreement for the Full Liberalization of Passenger Air Services (MAFLPAS); the Protocol to implement the sixth package of commitment on Air Services Negotiation; ASEAN-Korea Transport Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding; and an Agreement to investigate marine accidents.
