PM congratulates U-23 team on thrilling victory over Iraq

VGP – PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc sent a letter of congratulations to U-23 Viet Nam team and its coach Park Hang-seo following thrilling victory over Iraq in the 2018 AFC U-23 Championship quarter-finals on Saturday.

The golden stars celebrate the victory after winning the shootout against Iraq on Saturday.

PM Phuc wrote that this is a great pride of Viet Nam’s sports in general and the country’s football in particular.

He wished that the team will continue their excellent performance, solidarity and disciplines that have been proved in the next round. 

In group stage, Viet Nam opened the tournament with a 2-1 defeat to the Republic of Korea and won 1-0 against Australia before ending up with a 0-0 draw against Syria, securing the second place with four points in the group D.

Viet Nam continued incredible performance to secure a place in the semi-finals for the first time as Park’s side held nerve and defeated former champions Iraq 5-3 in a penalty shootout after an extraordinary 3-3 draw following the extra-time.

At a press conference after the match, Korean coach Park said he was not surprised with the outcome as he always put his faith in the team and the win is for all Vietnamese fans.

Many Vietnamese people flocked to streets, especially in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City, to celebrate the victory while many fans and football pundits across Asia also voiced support and respect for the golden stars./.
