PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc

The southern key economic zone comprises of Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Long An and Tien Giang provinces.

Addressing the event, PM said that Viet Nam has four key economic zones but has yet conducted any conference on key economic zone development. After three years of its term, the Government put the issue on the table for discussion, firstly the one for the southern key economic zone.

So far, Viet Nam houses four key economic zones namely the northern key economic region (comprising seven provinces and cities); the central key economic region (five provinces and cities), the southern key economic region (eight provinces and cities), and the Mekong Delta key economic region (four provinces and cities). The four key economic regions include 24 provinces and cities, accounting for 27.3% of the country’s total areas, 27% of the national population, and 89% of national GDP.

The southern key economic zone holds special socio-economic position especially GDP. It owns adequate conditions for growth including industry, trade, services, especially high-tech, IT, high-quality manpower training, service center especially logistics, transport. Particularly, HCMC works as the nucleus for regional growth. Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces have enjoyed stable growth rates over the past time.

According to PM Phuc, the southern key economic zone is the only region which has both conditions and advantages for industry and service development in a fast, efficient, and sustainable manner.

Hence, the PM suggested delegates review socio-economic performance in 2019 and 2020 to extricate obstacles and difficulties to fulfill the signed agreements.

Delegates were urged to discuss solutions namely policies on investment and finance for the region to make breakthroughs in the future./.
