The 51-member committee is responsible for formulating draft 10-year socio-economic development strategy for 2021-2030 and the five-year development plan for 2021-2025.

In his opening speech, the Government leader asked subcommittee members to focus on discussing the revision, supplementation and completion of draft reports, especially in the face of severe impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as deploying tasks for the subcommittee in the time to come.

He touched upon a number of issues for members to discuss, including the impacts of the disease on the global economy.

As for Viet Nam, PM Phuc requested subcommittee members to focus on revising, supplementing and completing the draft reports with special notice to the multifaceted impacts of COVID-19 on the country in the following years, in addition to reviewing Viet Nam’s 2016-2020 socio-economic performance and discussing the socio-economic development plan for 2021-2025.

It is necessary to clarify difficulties and challenges posed by COVID-19 and measures for the pandemic fight and socio-economic recovery in 2020, thence supplementing the lessons of experience learnt after the period of coping with the disease, he said.

Members should assess the international context in the period of 2016-2020 and in the near future when the pandemic continues to evolve complicatedly, as well as the newly arising issues, focusing on the new challenges and opportunities, the renovation of development mindset, and the country’s strong belief and aspirations to rise above, the leader stated.

He stressed the need to review and properly adjust socio-economic development goals in the new normal, particularly those heavily affected by the disease, such as the economic growth rate and GDP per capita.

Regarding orientations, tasks and solutions for the time ahead, the PM asked for specific comments on some key issues that need adjustments compared to the previous draft documents due to the impact of COVID-19, including development plans for the country, regions and sectors; disaster, disease and climate change prevention and control; and the development of digital economy and human resources./.
