The PM made that statement on April 5 while delivering a speech at the third Mekong River Commission (MRC) Summit in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The Vietnamese Government’s priority is to respond to negative impacts on the Mekong Delta due to climate change and human activities, he said, asking to launch prompt and realistic measures to ensure the Mekong Delta to provide rice for regional food security.

He proposed the MRC give priority to enhancing the full and effective implementation of the Mekong Agreement 1995 and the supervision and coordination role of the MRC in launching commitments of member countries.

The MRC needs to establish the regional development plan that is harmonious with each nation’s water resources, accelerate the realization of joint projects, boost information exchange within the Mekong River, promote coordination and cooperation activities with its partner nations, development partners and organizations to mobilize resources and learn experiences in management and modern technology in launching sub-region cooperative initiatives, he added.

He expected that all the member countries will enhance solidarity and action for a peaceful Mekong River, connecting sustainable lives and bring prosperity for all people.

The summit was attended by the PMs from the four member countries of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam and representatives from two dialogue partners, including the Minister of Water Resources of China and the Minister of Environmental Conservation and Forestry of Myanmar.

At the event, delegates reviewed cooperation within the MRC, the implementation of commitments at the second MRC Summit in 2014 in Ho Chi Minh City and identified prioritized areas in the upcoming time.

The Siem Reap Declaration was approved at the summit, acknowledging achievements of the MRC and proposing new opportunities and challenges for the Mekong River. The Declaration affirms the importance of Mekong cooperation and the enhancement of effective implementation of the Mekong Agreement 1995 as well as identifies prioritized activities in the next four years and long-term orientations for MRC cooperation.
