PM active at 2014 Nuclear Security Summit

In a tightened security atmosphere, 54 leaders of the world, including 14 Presidents, one king, 16 Prime Ministers and Deputy Prime Ministers, United Nations Secretary General, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency discussed ways to enhance nuclear security.

They focused discussions on measures to strengthen nuclear safety and security coordination, prevent terrorism, crimes involving in radioactive substances that threaten the security of countries.

The participants highly valued the IAEA’s role in coordinating activities of international organizations and initiatives in order to improve the efficiency of cooperation in ensuring nuclear security.

They agreed to issue the Joint Statement showing their resolve to foster nuclear security and prevent nuclear terrorism, uphold the responsibility of every country, and highlight the importance of international cooperation in which IAEA is the key player.

PM Dung fully participated in the agenda and delivered speeches in which he affirmed Viet Nam’s consistent policy of and strong commitments to ensuring nuclear security, accelerating disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and peaceful use of nuclear energy, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation to assist developing countries in this sphere, supporting multilateral mechanisms, especially IAEA and the United Nations.

The Government chief proposed measures that Viet Nam has deployed to ensure nuclear security, including the improvement of legal system on nuclear security, enhancement of cadres’ capacity, ratification of and accession to a number of international conventions, completion of the fuel conversion program at Da Lat Research Reactor.

Bilateral meetings

On the sidelines of the Summit, PM Dung had 20 meetings with leaders of other countries and international organizations who showed their good will to cooperate with Viet Nam.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for direct conversations between leaders of the two countries to address complicated and unexpected issues. He also suggested both countries should effective realize agreements to deepen the bilateral ties.

US President Barack Obama said his country will take into account Viet Nam’s real conditions in Trans-Pacific Partnership talks for a balanced agreement, open market for Vietnamese products like garment, footwear, farm produce.

Especially, President Barack Obama sai he would visit Viet Nam soon.

President Park Geun-hye of the Republic of Korea expressed his hope that the two countries would soon complete the bilateral free trade agreement negotiations so as to foster their trade and investment linkages.

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and PM Dung agreed to further enhance the extensive strategic partnership. The two PMs said they tasked competent agencies to seriously investigate the suspected misuse of Japanese Government aid involving the Japan Transportation Consultants Inc. and the ongoing Ha Noi City Urban Railway Construction Project (Line 1).

Both sides affirmed that they would coordinate closely in fighting corruption in projects funded by Japan.

Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande hoped to boost cooperation with Viet Nam and said he would visit the Southeast Asian country soon.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel shared Viet Nam’s consistent stance to protect territorial sovereignty and settle divergences and disputes in the East Sea through peaceful means.

She invited PM Dung to visit Germany soon.

Singaporean PM Lee Hsien Loong voiced his support for peaceful settlement of disputes in the East Sea, with respect to international law.

PM Lee pledged to continue effort to beef up economic, trade and investment cooperation with Viet Nam, particularly in implementing Viet Nam-Singapore industrial park projects, backing Viet Nam in Trans-Pacific Partnership talks.

Besides, PM Dung also met with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, European Commission Barroso, Kazakhstani President Nazarbayev, Turkey’s Abdullah Gül, Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif, Canadian PM Stephen Harpe, Vice President of Indonesia, Vice President of the Philippines, Deputy PM of Malaysia, Czech Deputy PM among others.

Leaders of the above countries and organizations spoke highly of Viet Nam’s position as a responsible member of the international community.

Like an official visit to the Netherlands

On the occasion, the Vietnamese delegation to the 3^rd Nuclear Security Summit led by PM Nguyen Tan Dung had a series of meetings with the host leaders.

During the two PMs’ talks, PM Mark Rutte thanked PM Dung for active contribution to the success of the Summit and pledged to support Viet Nam’s sustainable development.

He said that during his upcoming visit to Viet Nam, scheduled in June, both sides will sign a number of agreements on agriculture, energy, seaport development, ship-building, national defense, and climate change adaptation.

Queen Maxima said her country expects to expand micro-finance cooperation with Viet Nam. PM Dung asked Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan to take prime responsibility to coordinate with UNDP office in Ha Noi to concretize the proposal.

Vietnamese officials, including Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang, Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien, Governor of the State Bank of Viet Nam Nguyen Van Binh, Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Quan, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Deputy Minister of National Defense Nguyen Chi Vinh also met with Dutch officials to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the two law-making bodies, Governments, ministries of the two countries.

In short, PM Nguyen Tan Dung’s activities in the Netherlands are the continuation of Viet Nam’s diplomatic activities to open up new opportunities and improve the position an prestige of the country on the international arena./.
