At the talks, the two sides consented that the UN needs to uphold its role as the largest multi-lateral organization in the world, enhancing cooperation between nations to ensure peace, security and development.

As a responsible member of the UN, Viet Nam has made active contribution to joint works of the UN, including the completion of its tasks as a member of the UN Human Rights Council and fulfilling its role as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council and the UNESCO Executive Council, heading to run for the position as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 period, said Mr. Phuc.

He proposed the UN accelerate its support for Viet Nam in realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on climate change and the  Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, confirming that Viet Nam has decided to be listed among top ten nations implementing the UN Initiative on response to El Nino and La Nina.

The UN Secretary General hailed Viet Nam’s socio-economic achievements over recent years, especially in realizing the Millennium Development Goals, expecting that Viet Nam will gain more success in launching the Sustainable Development Goals.

He valued contributions of Viet Nam at the UN’s mechanisms and its participation in the UN peacekeeping forces, asserting that the UN will enhance cooperation with Viet Nam through realizing the Joint Strategic Plan in the 2017-2021 phase.

Discussing international and regional issues, PM Phuc reported to the UN Secretary General the recent happenings in the East Sea, suggesting the Secretary General advocate addressing disputes in the East Sea with peaceful measures based on the international regulations, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, respecting diplomatic and legal processes, and soon completing a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.

Mr Antonio Guterres highlighted the role of preventive diplomacy and treatment of disputes with peaceful measures in line with the international regulations.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Viet Nam-UN relations, the PM invited the Secretary General to pay a visit to Viet Nam this year. Mr. Antonio Guterres expressed his thanks and said he will visit Viet Nam in an appropriate time.

Speaking at the ceremony, the PM referred to the moment when Viet Nam’s flag waved at the UN headquarters 40 years ago, making the acknowledgement of the international community for an independent,  free and united nation as well as paving the way for Viet Nam’s international integration.

Vietnamese people always remember the UN and the international community’s assistance for the nation after the war and its national development process, he said.

Viet Nam attaches importance to the cooperative relations with the UN, affirmed the PM, supposing that the UN needs to uphold its central role in peace-keeping activities, international security and address disputes with peaceful measures based on the UN Charter and international law.

Viet Nam is a responsible member of the UN and advocates reforming the UN in a more effective, transparent and democratic way, he said, adding that the nation will promote its scale in joining UN activities.

The UN Secretary General  and UN President of the General Assembly congratulated Viet Nam’s development success over the recent four decades and appraised the nations’ contributions to the UN.
