At these meetings, Prime Minister Phuc briefed about Viet Nam’s recent socio-economic achievements and contributions to the common work of the international community.

He called on the European Union (EU) members to accelerate early ratification of the Viet Nam-EU free trade agreement (EVFTA) that was adopted by the European Commission on October 17.

PM Phuc expressed his belief that the trade deal and the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) will serve as the key foundation for Viet Nam and the EU to advance cooperation to new heights.

He asked the leaders of these countries to support Viet Nam-the only candidate of the Asia-Pacific region, to win a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in the tenure 2020-2021, affirming Viet Nam will make greater contribution to maintenance of international peace and security once it becomes a non-permanent member of the Council.

The leaders of the countries spoke highly of Viet Nam’s rising role and position in the region and the world, pledging to continue close coordination with Viet Nam at the United Nations and international organizations in order to maintain peace, security, cooperation and development across the world, including the East Sea.

They voiced support for settlement of disputes through peaceful measures with respect for international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The European Union (EU) countries said early signing and ratification of the EVFTA will be a significant step toward realizing the EU-Asia connectivity strategy.
