The project, which has a capacity of 3,200 MW, will be implemented at total costs of more than VND91 trillion (around US$4 billion), with its power prices planned at seven US cents per kilowatt-hour.

If getting the support and cooperation from the Government, ministries and sectors of Viet Nam, the investors expect to put the first turbine, with a capacity of 1,000 MW, into operation within the next three years.

According to the investors’ report, the gas emissions from the plant will be at a low level compared to coal-fueled power projects, and there is almost no other waste that causes environmental pollution.

Bac Lieu’s provincial leaders hailed the project as being feasible, stating that the price level of seven US cents per kWh is reasonable and lower than the prices of power produced by coal-fueled plants, wind power, and solar power.

Addressing the reception, PM Phuc stressed the Mekong Delta’s huge potential for gas-fueled projects, noting that many investors are planning to build gas-fueled power plants in this region.

He welcomed the partners to explore and show their wish to invest in Bac Lieu’s power project.

The Government leader assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN), and relevant ministries and sectors to consider making the adjustments needed and adding the project (if highly feasible) to the country’s power development plan so that it could begin to generate electricity in 2021.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment, Bac Lieu authorities, and relevant ministries and sectors were requested to guide the investors to perform all the relevant investment procedures.

PM Phuc highlighted the significance of the project, stressing the need to ensure the strict and organized implementation of all stages in line with regulations, the optimal mitigation of its influence on the environment, the high competitiveness of power prices, and the progress of the project.
