PM Nguyen Tan Dung receives Vietnam-US senior advisory council on enhancement of competition capacity

(Vietnam Government Website)- On 7 November 2006, at the headquarters of the Government Office, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung received the Vietnam-US Senior Advisory Council on Enhancement of Competition Capacity on the occasion of its second meeting in Hanoi.

At the reception, PM Nguyen Tan Dung heard Mr Ernest Bower, President of the council and its members report the council’s performance as well as recommendations in order to enhance Vietnam’s competition capacity.

According to Mr Ernest Bower, although the council has been set up for just 2 years, it has contributed to improving the investment environment in Vietnam. Mr Ernest Bower said the council had sent a letter to American Congress and Government requesting early approval and grant of the PNTR status to Vietnam on the occasion of President G. Bush’s visit to Vietnam in November.

The council has suggested initiatives, programs and projects to develop 4 areas in Vietnam, namely infrastructure and energy, information technology and education - training, finance and capital market; trade and general development, as well as made recommendations to revise some of Vietnam’s institutions and policies in order to facilitate investments.

After informing him that Vietnam was official admitted to WTO on 7 November and it is expected to open the APEC 14 in a week’s time, PM Nguyen Tan Dung attributed Vietnam’s success in joining WTO to the great efforts made by the Vietnamese Government and people and support from international friends, including American entrepreneurs and investors. PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng welcomed American entrepreneurs to come and search for investment opportunities in Vietnam and agreed in principle the council’s initiatives and recommendations to revise Vietnam’s institutions and policies so as to facilitate investment in the 4 areas of its concern.

He assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment to work with the council and other Government agencies concerned to sort out outstanding problems in order to improve the investment climate. PM Nguyen Tan Dung welcomed the council’s idea to send the letter to the American Congress and Government, considering it a turning point in bilateral relations./.
