Addressing the meeting, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng extolled the health sector’s important contributions to the country’s socio-economic development last year. The sector made great efforts in quarantining and controlling epidemics, especially bird flu (H5N1), assisting victims of natural disasters; many central and local hospitals were upgraded and equipped with advanced facilities for medical examination and treatment; healthcare quality was ameliorated; millions of poor people were helped to access to health services.

The PM urged the sector to focus on five major tasks in 2007 as follows:

First, to further check planning schemes, plans, action programs to provide good healthcare services to people;

Second, to engage in the whole society in healthcare, to diversify public health and medical services. The PM encouraged the sector to select and a central hospital for equitization in 2007.

Third, to renew and devolve the management over hospitals at different levels;

Fourth, to accelerate the application of scientific and technical advances in medical treatment and examination, to promote pharmaceutical industry and production of medical equipment, to expand the training of human resources, especially qualified medical workers;

Fifth, to speed up administrative reform, to prevent negative phenomena, including corruption, in order to build an increasingly transparent and powerful health sector.
