The data were made public today at a meeting presided by Deputy PM Trương Vĩnh Trọng, Head of the Steering Committee for Northwestern Region, to review the socio-economic performance here in the first half and set targets for the region in the rest of the year.

Deputy PM Trọng requested his inferior to proactively implement the poverty reduction program and help local residents to clear makeshift dwellings in the second half.

Mr. Trong also asked the local authorities and relevant agencies to pay due attention to improving human resources and pour more investment into health care as well as education and vocational training for ethnic minority people and rural laborers.

Noticeably, in the first six months, Lai Châu, Tuyên Quang and Phú Thọ provinces saw economic growth rates of 14.4%, 14.3% and 13.5% respectively. The total food production and industrial output surged by 1.4% and 14.8% against the same period last year.

Apart from these achievements, there remain some problems in the region, including forest fires, and drug crimes./.
