National tiger protection program passed

The program aims to protect and preserve tigers, their habitats and preys; gradually prevent the declining number of tigers in the wild by 2020 and fulfill Viet Nam’s commitments to the Global Tiger Recovery Program (GTRP).

Tiger habitats subjected to protection include national parks namely Vu Quang (in Ha Tinh province), Pu Mat (Nghe An province), Yok Don (Dak Lak province), Chu Mom Ray (Kon Tume province), and two nature reserves including Sop Cop (Son La province) and Song Thanh (Quang Nam province).

Tiger protection task will be mixed with related programs and strategies such as the Forest Development Strategy by 2020 with a vision towards 2030 and the National Biodiversity Conservation Strategy by 2020 with a vision towards 2030.

The program strengthens management and supervision of tiger population; investigates tiger farms and set up a national database to manage and identify captive tigers.

Earlier, the conservation group WWF ranked VietNam as the worst country for wildlife crime in its first such survey of how well 23 countries in Asia and Africa protect rhinos, tigers and elephants./.
