VGP – PM Nguyen Tan Dung has approved the National Strategy on Tobacco Harm Prevention, which strives to reduce the smoking prevalence among young adults (aged 15-24) from 26% in 2011 to 18% by 2020.

Besides, the strategy also aims to decrease the proportion of smoking among men from 47.4% in 2011 to 39% by 2020 and below 1.4% among women by 2020.

One of crucial solutions proposed is to establish a roadmap to adjust tax and benchmark selling price of cigarette as well as punish individuals and organizations selling cigarettes to people under 18.

A program will be launched to improve the awareness and increase the sponsorship of policy-makers and community in preventing tobacco harm.

The strategy will be realized in two phases, 2012-2015 and 2016-2020. It will be financed though tobacco harm prevention fund, State budge and the contribution of domestic and foreign individuals and organizations.
