Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly (NA) Tong Thi Phong meets Speaker of the House of Representatives Tony Smith in Canberra, Australia, on January 14, 2020.

At the meeting, Phong expressed deep sympathy over consequences caused by bushfires in Australia. She thanked Australia for giving priority to providing Official Development Assistance (ODA) for Viet Nam and creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese living and studying in Australia.

Regarding cooperation at multi-lateral forums, the Vietnamese Vice Chairwoman expressed thanks to Australia to advocate Viet Nam's bid to win the non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council in the 2020-2021 tenure, expecting the two sides to strengthen cooperation and mutual support at international and regional issues, making contributions to peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

Both sides need to promote effectiveness of the Viet Nam-Australia Friendship Associations to exchange and share experience in legislation, supervision, law enforcement, thus enhancing mutual knowledge and trust.

The occasion, Phong conveyed the invitation of NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan to the Speaker of the House of Representatives to attend  the 41st General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA 41) at the end of August 2020 in Viet Nam.

For his side, Tony Smith supposed that the cooperative partnership in economics, trade, defense and security are crucial in the two nations’ relationship, which was referred by Australian PM Scott Morrison during his official visit to Viet Nam in August 2019.

He raised his voice to advocate Viet Nam’s viewpoints on issues of common concerns.
