Deputy Ministry of Industry and Trade Hoang Quoc Vuong made the announcement at a summary meeting of competitive wholesale power market from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 on October 8 in Ha Noi.

The Electricity Regulatory Authority under the MoIT reported that over the last five years, 87 electricity factories have joined the market with a total output of nearly 23,000 MW, increasing nearly three times against July, 2012 (with only 31 electricity factories).

The competitive wholesale power market was regulated in the Law on Electricity in 2004 and Decision 63/2013/QD-TTg dated November 8, 2013 on regulations on schedule, conditions and structure of the electricity sector.

The roadmap for the deployment of the competitive electricity wholesale market is divided into four periods with initial pilot operation period beginning in 2016. The second pilot operation period is implemented in 2017 and 2018. The official launch of the market is slated for 2019./.
