MoF reveals agenda for AFMM 14

VGP – The 14th ASEAN Financial Ministers Meeting (AFMM 14) and related ASEAN and ASEAN + 3 meetings are slated to take place on April 4-8 in Nha Trang, the coastal city of the central province of Khánh Hòa.

March 26, 2010 5:10 PM GMT+7

These events are expected to draw the participation of ten Finance Ministers of ASEAN, Deputy Finance Ministers of China, the Republic of Korea, and Japan, the ASEAN General Secretary and the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), said Vietnamese Deputy Finance Minister Trần Xuân Hà at a press briefing on March 26 in Hà Nội.

AFMM 14 will review regional and global economic performance; discuss macro-economic policies of regional governments; evaluate financial cooperative activities within ASEAN and set up orientations in 2010.

Specifically, the Ministers intend to propose measures and policies towards regional sustainable development by reviewing the implementation of financial and monetary integration roadmap in the region.

They are expected to sign the Revised Protocol on the ASEAN Harmonized Tariff Nomenclature (AHTN) which would perfect import and export tariff and facilitate statistical work among ASEAN member states.

In addition, ASEAN 3 Finance Ministers will examine progress in implementing ASEAN 3 financial cooperation initiative, the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralisation (CMIM) Agreement and the Asia bond market initiative (ABMI). They will also approve plans of action for financial cooperation in 2010.

ASEAN financial cooperation is conducted through the ASEAN Financial Ministers Meeting (AFMM). This process started in April 1997 when the regional financial crisis occurred. Its main objective is to accelerate the cooperation and policy dialogue between ASEAN member countries on economic and financial sectors in an attempt to strengthen the regional financial system and to develop an effective and comprehensive regional financial market for sustainable economic growth.
