Ministry asks for tightening supervision on overseas arrivals in Covid-19 fight

Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long made the statement at a teleconference on Covid-19 prevention and control between the Ministry and localities’ Departments of Health on January 20.

Viet Nam entered the 50th day with zero new Covid-19 infection case in the community, however the risks still pose concerns, Long said, adding that the Ministry of Health and the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control have consulted the Prime Minister to minimize arrivals by air in a bid to ensure a safety traditional Tet festival for local people.

Functional agencies have recently uncovered 100-150 illegal arrivals via land border a day, and the number even peaked 500.

The Ministry said it expects that families with relatives living overseas will make commitments to the local authorities that their relatives, once returning home, must undergo the required quarantine.

Also the same day, 20 volunteers received the second shots of Nanocovax - a Viet Nam-developed Covid-19 vaccine - at the Military Medical University.

Among them, three, who had have the first shot on December 26, 2020, were given the second shot of 50mcg each and the remainders got a dose of 25 mcg each. All of the volunteers are now in stable conditions.

Viet Nam has so far gone through more than half of the first stage of clinical vaccine trials.

As of late January 19, Viet Nam recorded 1,540 Covid-19 infection cases, according to the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.

Of the patient tally, 1,402 have recovered and exited hospitals while 35 died.
