The Festival is jointly held by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) and the municipal authority of Cần Thơ in order to highlight values of the Mekong River and Delta.

The event is supposed to be a chance for Mekong Delta countries – namely Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Việt Nam - and Japan to advertise their tourism potential and cultures; and consolidate the friendship among these countries.

According to Mr. Nguyễn Văn Tình, Director of the International Cooperation Department of MCST, the Mekong-Japan cooperation focuses on cultural and educational activities to improve the public and tourists’ awareness of importance of water sources in general and the Mekong River in particular.

The major activities include a tourist fair, a Mekong-Japan Tourism and Cultural photo exhibition, traditional art performances of Japan and the Mekong region, and some sports games.

There will be a ministerial meeting of the Mekong sub-region countries and Japan on cultural and tourist connectivity between the two sides for their sustainable development and prosperity.

A scientific workshop underscoring sustainable tourism development in the Mekong Delta will be held, with participants examining the cultural values, infrastructure, human resources and prospects of Mekong-Japan tourism co-operation.
