Mekong Extension Learning Alliance meeting held in Da Nang

VGP – The 5th Annual Meeting Mekong Extension Learning Alliance (MELA) opened in the central city of Da Nang on September 11 within the cooperative framework of agricultural training and extension.

The conference is organized from September 11-14, attracting the participation of 60 delegates from five nations of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. 

The event aims to share information, knowledge and experiences in agricultural counseling and extension services between nations in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. 

A number of reports were presented on nations’ efforts and policies on smart agriculture in response to climate change, green agriculture and developing farm organizations including the development of agricultural co-operatives of MELA members. 

Head of the international cooperation department, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Do Anh Tuan said that the MELA will help farmers to get access to information technology, market development and investment capital to address challenges on climate change, natural calamity and environment. 

The coordination between agriculture organizations in the Mekong River is meaningful to such areas such food security, food safety, animal and plant disease control and sustainable development of agriculture-forestry-aquaculture sector.

The event will propose specific outcomes to boost cooperation between agricultural organizations in the region to improve capacity, technology transfer and agricultural innovation at each country.    

The MELA, initiated in March 2015 in Ha Noi, is an alliance formed to provide a forum for exchanges of agriculture extension and other important information on rural development in the Mekong region. The mission of MELA is to be a network for all stakeholders in agriculture and rural development in the Mekong Region to continuously learn and share knowledge and best practices with each other and from outside sources in advisory services for sustainable agriculture, marketing and rural development.

The previous four meetings were held in Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Thailand.
