The People’s Committee of the northern province of Bắc Giang and the Việt Nam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) on Friday morning inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support Sơn Động District’s poverty reduction in the period of 2009–2015.

Accordingly, Vinatex will assist Sơn Động, one of the poorest districts in Việt Nam, to build houses for disadvantaged people. The Group also pledged to recruit local laborers into its subsidiaries and build a garment factory in Sơn Động.

In 2009, Vinatex will hand over 22 houses to the district; provide free health examination and medicines to two poor communes; and grant scholarships to 20 students from Sơn Động.

Leaders of the group also revealed a plan on selecting and growing industrial crops of high economic efficiency in the district.

Meanwhile, the Electricity of Việt Nam (EVN) pledged to allocate VND 280 billion to help three districts, Than Uyên, Tân Uyên, and Phong Thổ of the northern mountainous province of Lai Châu, develop their rural power grids so that all communes of these districts will be electrified.

Nearly 90% of local households will access to electricity source by 2012.

EVN will sell electricity to poor households at preferential prices stipulated by the Government.

The group also commits a VND 7.64 billion fund to build 16 houses of 24 square meters each and give 1,400 local families with VND 5 million each for their house building.

EVN is planning the construction of 21 boarding houses in three districts and some others for junior secondary students.

The group will spend VND 16 billion on educational activities, vocational training, and healthcare for ethnic groups in the province.
