Laos builds a railway connected to VN

VGP - The Lao Government has allowed Malaysia’s Giant international group to survey, design and build a railway linking Laos’ central region to its border with Việt Nam.

February 23, 2009 3:10 PM GMT+7

Earlier, the Malaysian group signed with Việt Nam’s Quảng Trị Province a memorandum of understanding on building a 100-km railway from Đông Hà to the Lao Bảo international border gate to Laos’ Savannakhet Province.

General Director of the group, Mr. Nooz Mohamed Ahmad, revealed that Giant was also asked by Thailand to undertake a railway from the Kingdom’s borders to Savannakhet.

Once completed, all the above projects will form a rail route linking Việt Nam, Laos and Thailand.

Capital investment for the rail section in Việt Nam reaches US $2.5 billion, while the cost for the 220-km rail in Savanakhet is US $5 billon.

The money comes from the Fund for Investment Capital Guarantee.
