PM Dung made the statement during a meeting with Khanh Hoa province’s key leaders on realizing socio-economic tasks and local drought prevention.

He asked the leaders to ensure safe water for local residents and minimize damage to agricultural production while suggesting ample water supply for cattle and growing drought-resistant plants.

Regarding local socio-economic situation, PM Dung praised the locality's first quarter achievements, including a 7% rise of gross domestic product, and an average income per capita of $2,300.

The Government leader urged the provincial officials to work to reach targets set for this year, organize successfully Party congress at all levels, repeat role models in socio-economic development, and promote local potential in tourism, services, aquaculture and seafood processing.

Khanh Hoa province should take drastic measures to improve the agricultural structure in a close link with the construction of new-style rural areas, take advantage of large forest areas, develop the processing industry for export, mobilize resources for socio-economic infrastructure development and enhance the province’s competitiveness and protect landscapes and the environment, PM Dung added.

At the meeting, PM Dung and officials from several central agencies and ministries dealt with Khanh Hoa province’s suggestions on drought prevention, supports to drought-affected farmers and investment in reservoirs to ensure stable water supply.

So far, drought has directly affected one fourth of Khanh Hoa province’s rice area (over 5,000ha) and is forecast to get more severe until August. Over two third of the rice area is unable to be cultivated because of drought.

Local authorities have strived to ensure water supply for local residents, industry, services and farming through a rotational order and added pump stations.
