Japan invests $1 million in high-tech indoor farm in Ha Nam

VGP - Japanese group Showa Denko’s general director Daiken Murakami has decided to build a factory producing safe vegetables in the northern province of Ha Nam, with a total investment capital of US$1 million.

April 09, 2015 4:25 PM GMT+7

At a working session with the provincial People’s Committee on April 8 at which Murakami explained the details of the proposed ‘plant factory’ and introduced the technique of using LED lights for growing vegetables indoors.

The factory, to be built in Duy Tien District’s Dong Van II Industrial Zone, will adopt a cultivation system that uses LED lighting instead of sunlight.

It is expected to be in full operation by the end of the year.

The technique purportedly helps increase the productivity of vegetables by 2.5 times, compared to those grown outdoors in natural light.

Murakami said that Showa Denko has put up dozens of such factories and plans to replicate the model in Viet Nam.

Provincial Party Committee Secretary Mai Tien Dung said the project suits the province’s policy to develop industrialised agriculture.

He affirmed that the province will invest in transport and infrastructure to facilitate the group's project implementation.
