Japan grants US$2.5 million to help overcome climate change
VGP – The Government of Japan on May 31 decided to provide an urgent non-refundable support of US$2.5 million to help Viet Nam overcome consequences of droughts and salinity intrusion.
The money will be used to reduce mal-nutrition and enhance water supply and improve the quality of water for residents in the most affected areas.
It is estimated that 150,000 people will benefit from water supply projects as well as 120,000 pregnant women and 7,000 children will be provided with nutrition support.
Japan also mulls over cooperating with Viet Nam to carry out research and propose mid and long-term solutions for responding to droughts and salinity intrusion in the coming time.
Last March, the Vietnamese Government declared the emergency situation as 52 out of 63 provinces and cities have been affected by serious droughts and salinity intrusion in the last six decades due to El Nino influence.
The Vietnamese Government called on the international community to grant US$48.5 million in humanitarian aid for Viet Nam to address the consequences./.
