VGP - The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on November 25 signed a loan agreement with the Government of Viet Nam to provide a Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan worth JPY11.891 billion (more than US$113 million) for the Ha Long City Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Project.

This project aims to increase the wastewater treatment capacity of Ha Long city in the northern province of Quang Ninh by constructing wastewater treatment facilities and pipelines.

The project will contribute to the improvement of sanitary conditions in the city and Ha Long Bay, and sustainable development of the province.

Earlier, the JICA financed Ha Long City Water Environment Improvement Project, which has helped increase the wastewater treatment capacity in Ha Long city by constructing urban wastewater treatment facilities, thereby contributing to the improvement of sanitary conditions and sustainable development of the city.

Implemented from 2015 and expected to complete by 2021 with approximately VND3,200 billion (around US$140 million) invested from Japanese ODA, the project includes main components of construction, rainwater drainage system and waste water treatment system within the city.

Ha Long City is the home to Ha Long Bay, which is dotted with 1,600 limestone islands and islets and covers an area of over 1,500 square km. This extraordinary area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
