The visit is expected to create a new landmark in the bilateral relationship, making contributions to deepen Viet Nam-Italy Strategic Partnership.

Viet Nam and Italy officially set up diplomatic ties on March 23, 1973. The two nations have usually exchanged high-ranking delegations, paving the way for developing the Strategic Partnership, remarkably Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to Italy in January 2013, late State President Tran Dai Quang’s visit to Italy in November 2016 and the visits to Viet Nam made by Italian PM Matteo Renzi and President Sergio Mattarella in June 2014 and November 2015.

The two sides have enhanced close coordination at international forums and multi-lateral organizations as well as established a number of mechanisms such as Deputy Foreign Ministerial-level strategic dialogue, Defense Deputy Ministerial-level policy dialogue and the Joint Committee on economic cooperation.

During the high-ranking meetings, Italian senior leaders asserted their determination to boosting the multi-lateral relations with Viet Nam, regarding the Southeast Asian nation as a priority in promoting the relations with Southeast Asia.

Viet Nam-Italy trade value exceeds US$4 billion per year in 2016-2018 phase

Italy has been the fourth largest trade partner of Viet Nam in the EU and Viet Nam has taken the lead among trade partners of Italy in ASEAN.

As of early 2018, Italy poured US$388 million into 86 projects in Viet Nam, ranking 32rd among 128 nations and territories investing in Viet Nam.

The Italian Government has listed Viet Nam among 10 prioritized emerging markets for enhancing trade and investment ties.

Currently, the Italian Government has supported 11 valid projects and six other ones under preparations in Viet Nam with the committed capital of €100 million.

In 2017, as many as 60,000 Italian visitors travelled to Viet Nam. A total number of 5,000 Overseas Vietnamese are residing in Italy.
