Int’l community trusts VN's capability and experience in solving peace and security issues

VNGOP – That was the remark by Deputy PM, Foreign Minister Phạm Gia Khiêm in his interview on October 17 with VNA with regard to Việt Nam’s election as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in the 2008-09 terms with an almost overwhelming majority of votes (183/190).

Talking about the event’s significance, the Deputy PM considered it the country’s biggest political and diplomatic experience in 2007, marking another important achievement in Việt Nam’s implementation of foreign policy of openness and its active participation in international affairs. For the first time in the history Việt Nam will have a weighty voice on issues relating to international peace and security.

“With the new role, we will make use of the UNSC mechanism to protect our national interests and maintain an environment of peace and stability in the interest of development,” Deputy PM Khiêm stressed. He went on to say that the principle of Việt Nam’s function as a UNSC non-permanent member would be to consider and decide issues tabled at the UNSC in the spirit of independence, self-reliance, and national interest while abiding by the international laws and the UN Charter as well as taking into account all legitimate and genuine interests of concerned parties.

During its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, Việt Nam will urge the UN to adopt resolutions, decisions and specific measures aimed at further promoting the Organization's role in preventing arms race; speeding up disarmament; preventing and tackling international disputes; safeguarding nations' independence and the rights to self-determination; improving international economic climate; promoting socio-economic and cultural development; and securing the exercise of human rights. Representing Asia at the UNSC, Việt Nam pledges to function as a responsible representative in maintaining security, peace and stability in Asia and the world.
