VGP – More than 200 delegates from parliaments of 24 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, along with representatives of international organizations, are participating in a regional symposium of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on response to climate change, in Ho Chi Minh City from May 11-13.

The three-day event, themed “Responding to climate change – Actions of legislators”, focuses on discussing sustainable development goals (SDGs) and goals on gender equality and health in the context of climate change adaptation; as well as challenges, opportunities and actions in response to climate change.

Participants will also debate international commitments, the roles played by legislative bodies and the mobilization of resources for the implementation of SDGs as a whole and response to climate change in particular.

At the conference, the Vietnamese National Assembly will collaborate with the IPU to announce a set of self-assessment criteria for the SDGs implementation, which is jointly built by the IPU and the UN Development Program (UNDP).

A ceremony to transfer the chairmanship of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) from the Fiji Parliament to the Vietnamese National Assembly was held on May 11.

Viet Nam is considered among the countries most severely affected by climate change, with its Mekong Delta being one of the three most vulnerable deltas to rising sea water in the world.

The impacts of climate change on Viet Nam are serious and are a threat to the country’s realization of poverty reduction goals and millennium development goals, as well as its sustainable development.

At present, parliaments are promoting their leading role in dealing issues related to climate change. Through their legislative activities, supervision activities, budget-related decision-making and performance of representative functions, parliaments will recommend and ensure the implementation of sustainable development plans in countries and in the region.
