IFAD pledges to support VN in poverty reduction

VNGOP - President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Lennart Bage paid a working visit to Việt Nam on January 14-19.

January 22, 2008 7:11 AM GMT+7

In the reception to Mr. Lennart Bage, Standing Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng highly spoke of the assistance and cooperation from the United Nations in general and IFAD in particular for Việt Nams poverty alleviation and socio-economic development. Almost most of IFAD-financed projects (worth about US $135 million) have been conducted fruitfully in Việt Nam.

President Bage also praised these cooperation programs and pledged that IFAD will continue to grant Việt Nam about US $100 million in the next 5 years to reduce poverty and negative impacts of climate changes.

During the visit of President Lennart Bage, Việt Nam and IFAD signed an agreement on establishing the IFAD representative office in Việt Nam, an US $35 million agreement on funding "the Business Development Program for the Poor in the Countryside of Bến Tre and Cao Bằng Provinces" and a non-refundable aid of US $300,000 for the "Rural Development Strategy".
