At her meeting with Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam, Najat Mokhtar said Viet Nam is the first country she came to visit since she became IAEA Vice President.

Najat Mokhtar said her visit aims to learn about the deployment of projects on using peaceful atomic energy across socio-economic sectors in Viet Nam.

She will also tour atomic technology research and application facilities and have working sessions with the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, Deputy PM Dam spoke highly of the IAEA’s role in accelerating atomic energy development for peaceful purposes in Viet Nam as well as Najat Mokhtar’s support and assistance for healthcare establishments to strengthen cancer treatment capacity.

Over the past five years, cooperation between Viet Nam and the IAEA has been growing effectively through technical projects in developing infrastructure in such fields like healthcare, agriculture, industry, environmental protection, food security and climate change adaptation, Dam said.

Between 2014 and 2019, Viet Nam has implemented 20 national projects and joined 49 regional and inter-regional projects financed by the IAEA. The IAEA approved other five projects for Viet Nam from 2020-2021.

In late 2018, Viet Nam and the IAEA signed an agreement under which both sides would cooperate in using nuclear techniques in water resources and environment in Viet Nam.

The IAEA has also helped Viet Nam to enhance law making capacity in a bid to increase management of nuclear radiation and safety, he added.

Dam expressed his hope that the IAEA and Mokhtar would continue their support and assistance for Viet Nam in licensing new technological cooperative projects, human resource training, and construction of a center for nuclear science and technology research./.
