This is the second time Hải Phòng holds such event. Numerous activities will take place there until June 5.

The city is about to launch a campaign to raise public awareness of the WED and environment protection.

International seminars will be organized, focusing on such issues as protecting biodiversity of Cát Bà islands, coping with climate change, developing technologies to treat pollution, and others.

In addition, the city intends to plant a thick belt of trees to separate resident areas from the Tràng Cát solid waste treating station.

Since 1982, Việt Nam has annually carried out practical activities nationwide in favor of WED. MONRE always works with relevant ministries, sectors and localities to respond to the Day.

“Each year, 13 million hectares of forest have been lost and around 600 million hectares of land become uncultivated… The climate change is threatening the life and causing unpredictable consequences… Hence it is vital for us to unite with each other,” said Dr. Nguyễn Ngọc Sinh, President of the Việt Nam Association for Conservation of Natural and Environment Protection (VACNE) at a press conference held yesterday in Hà Nội on the threshold of the WED celebration.

The WED 2009 is themed “Your planet needs you - Unite to combat climate change.”
