The port will be built in the south of Lach Huyen estuary, along the route to the current Hai Phong Port, with the total length of 18 kilometers and container terminals’ length of 8,000 meters.

The work’s total investment is VND25 trillion (US$1.2 billion) from Japan’s ODA and state budget. The Component A is invested by the Viet Nam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) with the capital of VND18,627 billion (US$894) and Component B is invested by Hai Phong International Container Terminal Co., Ltd. with the total investment of VND6,572 billion (US$315 million).

Addressing the launching ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung asked Ministry of Transportation and Viet Nam maritime Administration to complete the project effectively on schedule.

He also asked Hai Phong city to co-operate with investors to solve any problem related to the project and Japanese contractors to ensure the signed agreements in order to put the port into operation early.

With modern infrastructure and handling technology, the port is expected to receive vessels of up to 8,000 TEU capacity and become the center for the domestic port system where exports from Northern Viet Nam will directly be shipped to Europe and America.

It will also play as a transit for international logistics routes from the Northeast Laos and South China when completed by 2016./.
